Studies

When I started painting outdoors, circa 1986, I somehow thought doing bigger work was going to make the paintings more important. It wasn’t until years later when I downsized that I started learning more. My progress was apparent because more work was being produced. The equation is fairly simply – produce more work and the likelihood is that better work will eventually result. The precious factor was gone. If the painting didn’t work at 5 x 7 inches, it certainly wasn’t going to work at 4 x 6 feet. Now that I paint every single day the process is the reward. Of course I want to make good work, but enjoying the daily routine of being a painter is the gift.
